Case Study - Your Entire Financial Life in One App

Overview

Finera was conceived as a next-generation personal finance app that could replace multiple financial tools with a single, unified experience. The goal was to let users connect hundreds of European banks (including nearly all Slovak banks), aggregate all their accounts under one profile, and turn raw financial data into clear, actionable insights.

We designed and built a mobile-first MVP focused on data aggregation, analytics, and visualization. Using Salt Edge and Open Banking (PSD2), the app allowed users to securely connect multiple bank accounts, browse transactions across institutions, and explore their finances through charts, reports, and custom calculations.

The product was also designed with compliance in mind, including support for KYC flows and secure financial data handling. Beyond banking, the architecture allowed integrations with accounting and financial systems.

What we did

The challenge

Building a personal finance app at this scale is primarily a data and integration problem. We had to:

• Integrate hundreds of banks via Open Banking (PSD2) using Salt Edge
• Normalize different transaction formats into a single data model
• Merge multiple banks and accounts under one user profile
• Build fast, readable analytics and visualizations on top of large datasets
• Design UX that makes complex financial data easy to understand
• Ensure security, privacy, and compliance from day one

On top of that, the system needed to be extensible for future features like investments and deeper financial insights.

The solution

We built a React Native mobile app with a custom component system and NativeWind for fast, consistent UI development. The app allowed users to:

• Securely connect accounts from hundreds of EU banks
• Combine multiple bank accounts across institutions into one profile
• Browse and filter transactions across all accounts
• View detailed financial reports, charts, and spending analytics
• Run custom calculations and build personal budgets
• Connect to external financial systems

The architecture was designed to scale toward future features such as investment tracking and advanced financial planning tools.

Outcome

Although the product was not released due to financial limitations, the project resulted in a production-grade MVP and a validated technical foundation for a large-scale fintech platform.
